Cossonay can catch

Cossonay ended their losing streak in the League competition with a convincing win over competitors Uprising CC in a match played at Vernier in Geneva. The star performer of the day was Lalit, who let his bat do the talking, with a brilliant 94 of 67 balls.

Coming to the match: skipper Yeti won the toss and decided to bat first. Tigers lost Arjun early on to a brilliant catch by Nelson. Sriniketh on the other end, was looking solid before edging a ball to the keeper at a score of 23. It was however the postdoc Lalit who changed the complexion of the game in favour of Cossonay with some brutal hitting consisting of powerful square cuts for 4`s and some huge straight 6`s. The only ball Lalit mistimed was the one he lobbed a catch to at 94, which otherwise could have been a maiden century for Cossonay.  The rest of the batsmen (Yeti, Rajesh, Ian, and Vaibhav) were more fire than fuel, throwing away their wickets to easy deliveries. The tail did not wag either as Cossonay folded for 182 in 36 overs.

The run chase was however difficult for Uprising, as they were left clueless to the fiery opening spells of Jasbir and Himank, who picked up 5 wickets between them. The slowness of the pitch also made it difficult to bat against the spinners Arjun and Sriniketh, who chipped in with quick 5 wickets to bundle out Uprising for 92 runs in 25 overs. Key to victory was also some sharp catching by Cossonay: Rajesh taking 2 catches behind the stumps, Arjun taking 3, Vaibhav taking 2 and Sriniketh taking 1.

Uprising were perfect hosts providing delicious lunch and playing the match in good spirits. Despite the win, there is a lot of scope for improvement in the team. Cossonay`s batting has been the weak link in the longer version of game with the team being unable to bat their full quota of 40 overs. Usually it’s the more disciplined team rather than the more talented one that wins competitions ;)
