Author: <Vaibhav Singh>, Player, Cossonay Cricket Club Date: <16.06.2013> Cossonay Tigers suffered a blow in the Swiss league championship as they lost their 2nd league match against CERN CC, played at CERN Prevessin site in France. On a gruelling hot day for the players, Cossonay were asked to bowl first after CERN won the toss. The customary pace duo of Himank and Kishore started the proceedings for Cossonay. Himank looked a bit off colour initially, giving away 5 wides in his first over. Kishore tightened things up from the other end, but was unlucky not to pick up a wicket. The first breakthrough was achieved when Aditya ran Peter Crook out with some clever fielding. Aftab and Manoj then picked a wicket each in quick succession to unsettle the opposition. CERN’s other opener, Richard Parker (74), however was solid and steadied the innings, without being too flamboyant. He was ably supported by a quick cameo from Ahmed (40). Post drinks break, Vaibhav bowled a tidy spell picking up 2 wickets, while Sriniketh was unlucky to have two catches dropped off his bowling by Himank and Lalit. CERN finished for a decent total of 203 runs in 8 wickets thanks to a gutsy 29 from Waqar at the end. Gnana’s triple strikes in his first over of the season, curtailed the free slogging at the end. The tigers faulted in the run chase as Sathya got out to a brilliant catch and Lalit was adjudged LBW, early on. Sriniketh(24) looked to carry his fine form from the previous week, as he hit some delightful boundaries and a maximum. He was bowled around the legs by the slow left arm spinner Parker. CERN’s bowler Chaudhuri then ran through the middle order removing Yeti, Aftab and Gnana cheaply. Vaibhav, sent to hold an end couldn’t deliver either as he edged a dolly by Parker to the keeper in trying to do something cheeky. When Aditya joined Kishore on the crease, the situation looked dismal as Cossonay had lost 7 wickets at a paltry score of 100. But the duo adopted an aggressive approach, taking calculated risks and hitting the loose deliveries for boundaries. Aditya (24) hit three boundaries and a six and was eventually caught out in taking his chances. Kishore (48) was in a different mood altogether, as he continued his dominance of the bowlers hitting 4 huge sixes. Eventually, Cossonay fell short of the target by 30 runs when Himank and Kishore were caught at the boundary, but not before CERN had started to panic to the onslaught by Kishore. At the end of the day, CERN were the more disciplined team and won the game. Cossonay gave away 30-40 odd extra runs with their sloppy fielding, dropped catches, and wides bowled, which proved costly at the end. The defeat means that Cossonay have to play hard in all the remaining league games to stay in contention. But that is what makes the championship more exciting J. Let’s keep fighting !! |
